Mount Magazine State Park will host the Mount Magazine State Park Hummingbird Special and Arkansas Audubon Society Annual Spring Convention from Friday through Sunday, May 14.
This special weekend brings birds and birders together on Arkansas’s highest point, Mount Magazine during this peak period of spring migration. Birders of all experience levels will search the mountain and surrounding area for birds of all kinds and colors.
Hummingbirds will be highlighted. A special live concert will include songs of Arkansas nature. All activities listed below are open to the public.
AAS Convention 12:45 p.m. AAS Field Trips: Join birders from all over Arkansas as they spread out to search for birds in various habitats. Meet in the lodge lobby for expertly led trips to unique locations.
7:15 p.m. What’s to Love About Hummingbirds: Tana Beasley from the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s Potlatch Conservation Education Center at Cook’s Lake will present this program in the banquet hall.
9 a.m. Fun Run: For a wild woodland challenge, this 6th annual Arkansas Ultra Running Association adventure will traverse 18 miles on most of the trails in Mount Magazine State Park. To register, contact: www.runarkansas.com/MtMagazine.htm. Starts at the visitor center.

Hummingbird Banding: Watch as experts from the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission capture, band, and release hummingbirds right before your eyes. These tiny ankle bracelets help us learn amazing details about the lives of our smallest of feathered friends. Don’t miss an opportunity to hear and experience the fastest heartbeat in nature. Meet in the lodge banquet hall. 2 hours
10 a.m. “Heavy Pedal” Garden Tour: Join author and park volunteer Lori Spencer at the Pollination Garden on the west side of the Skycrest dining room for a tour of the park volunteer group’s newest project.
10 a.m. Hummingbird Arts and Crafts: Combine your imagination, talent, inspiration, and new knowledge of hummingbirds in a variety of mediums for this make and take session. These crafts are best suited for ages 6-14. Meet in the lodge Sparrow Room. Ends at 2 p.m.
1 p.m. Mountaintop Birds: Mount Magazine is home to an interesting variety of nesting and transient bird, including some surprises. This powerpoint will introduce viewers to some of them and offer tips to identification by their songs. Meet in the banquet hall. 20 minutes.
3 p.m. Live concert featuring Still on the Hill: Join these longtime friends of the park for a live celebration of Arkansas in song. Their talents in song writing and performing will amaze you. Don’t miss this energetic, toe-tappin’ concert. Meet in the lodge banquet hall. 1½ hours.
7:15 p.m. Lessons I’ve Learned from Flora and Fauna: Lori Spencer, author of Arkansas Butterflies and Moths, will present this program in the banquet hall.
