Here are a few of the things going on in the South Logan County or surrounding area in the coming days.

Star Gazing

On Friday, July 14, starting at 8:30 p.m. there will be a star party at the Janet Huckabee Arkansas River Valley Nature Center at 8300 Wells Lake Road in Fort Smith.

The Arkansas Oklahoma Astronomical Society will have their telescopes set up on the north side of Wells Lake to view the night sky. Everyone is invited to come out and visit with the astronomers and view the stars and planets. Jupiter, Saturn and Mars might be visible.

Bike Festival

The 19th annual Fat Tire Festival in Eureka Springs, Arkansas July 14-16. The festival attracts riders, spectators, and party-goers from surrounding states. The three-day weekend is packed with downhill, super-d, short track, and cross country racing. Glued together with group rides, social gatherings, live music, craft beer, arts and crafts and mobile food court. All festivities located at Lake Leatherwood.

Chocolate For A Cause

World Chocolate Day was last Friday, but if you didn’t get enough you can visit the Dardanelle Community Center from 5 to 8:30 p.m. this Friday, July 14, for their 4th Annual Chocolate Festival.

There is a minimum $5 Donation at the door and proceeds benefit the Lizard Lunchroom Fund which helps pay the outstanding lunchroom balances for children in the Dardanelle School District.

Various Dardanelle area businesses will be set up with different types of chocolate for guests to enjoy. Businesses may bring candy, cookies, brownies, fudge or anything else you can think of that has chocolate.

(Bonus Idea) Free Country Music

Gilley’s in Pocola (Choctaw Casino) will hold a free concert with legendary Mo Bandy from 9:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Friday, July 14. Bandy is one of America’s all-time leading classic country music artist/performers, a man who is know to keep one of the busiest schedules in show business.

The casino is located at 3400 Choctaw Road in Pocola.

If more recent country is your fancy, Jo Dee Messina will be performing at Lee Creek Tavern in the Cherokee Creek Casino Roland at 9 p.m. on July 14 as well. The casino is located at 109 Cherokee Boulevard in Roland.
