Here are a few of the things going on in the South Logan County and surrounding area in the coming days.
Get Jazzed Up
The University of Arkansas – Fort Smith jazz band will perform a concert featuring a variety of music at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 17 as part of the university’s Season of Entertainment 36.
The UAFS Jazz Band and Jazz Catz will perform the concert at the ArcBest Corp. Performing Arts Center in the Fort Smith Convention Center, located at 55 South 7th St. Tickets are $8 and can be purchased through the UAFS Box Office at 479-788-7300 or by visiting http://tickets.uafs.edu. Students performing in the concert include Niki Waters of Booneville.
Dr. Christopher Barrick, head of the Department of Music and Theatre and director of the Jazz Band, said the band will perform a mix of jazz selections from traditional swing to modern and funk styles featuring the works by Frank Sinatra, Whitney Houston, Michael Buble and more.
The concert will also feature the university’s new music education professor, Dr. Scott Tomlison, as a guest director on “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy” by the Buddy Rich Band. Ginny Hudson, instructor of flute, will also perform a contemporary arrangement of “Heart and Soul.”
The Jazz Catz is under the direction of Don Bailey, UAFS director of jazz studies.
“The Jazz Catz and Jazz Band always bring passion and excellence to the stage,” Bailey said. “The crowd always finds the shows exciting and fun to watch.”
The Little Mermaid
“GHS Presents” The Little Mermaid, Thursday, Nov. 17, and Saturday, Nov. 19, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen is a beloved story of a little mermaid longing to be human. This story is transformed into a production enjoyed by young and old. The Greenwood High School drama and choir departments will delight you with mermaids, sea creatures, and humans.
Lee Ann Womack will be appearing at Center Stage at the Choctaw Casino, located at 3400 Choctaw Road in Pocola, Okla., at 8 p.m., Nov. 19.

The 8th Annual Booneville Christmas Festival will be held Saturday, Nov. 19, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the South Logan County Fair Grounds, located just off Highway 23 at 1184 Carolan Road, in the Littlefield Building.
The festival provides one-stop Christmas shopping experience featuring a fabulous assortment of handmade items, jewelry Christmas and home décor, gifts, clothing and food items.
The festival originally began as a way to give local home based businesses a chance to reach new customers an opportunity to advertise. It has grown to include small businesses as well as vendors from throughout Arkansas.
